A Few Random Mothering Thoughts for the Week

I have been slammed with work and unable to think deeply about any one thing this week, so instead I’ve got a bunch of random thoughts about parenthood, work, and family life that are whizzing through my brain with a million other things these days. Hope you enjoy.

Egypt in the preschool curriculum

Somehow I don't think this is what the teachers had in mind when they put Egypt on the pre-K curriculum

  • I am so super excited that my Bright Horizons center will be offering Smart Lunches in a couple of weeks. Just hoping that enough of their options are toddler friendly.
  • I encouraged my pre-K daughter, whose class is seriously studying Egypt, to share with her friends and teachers that her cousin was in the band that made Walk Like an Egyptian a pop hit of the ’80’s. How bad a mom does that make me?
  • I am part anxious and part elated about the fact that I will be traveling for a whole week for work just after Memorial Day. It will be the first time ever I’ll be away from my baby boy, which makes me sad. It will be the first time in a long time I will have been away from my 5-year-old, which makes it a little bit like a vacation.
  • I have found that a low-stress way to discuss approaches to parenting, discipline, etc. with my husband is to share a friend’s dilemma and ask how he’d approach it. We seem to agree a lot more when it comes to dealing with other people’s kids than when it comes to our own.
  • I’m thrilled that a group of moms from my daughter’s class has committed to establishing one night a month for us all (kids and parents) to get together casually after they start Kindergarten in the Fall.
  • I was disappointed to learn that my son’s favorite toddler teacher is moving and transferring to another Bright Horizons center. But my mood was instantly uplifted when I realized I can now add her as a babysitter.
  • We had a great weekend as a family with the Town Day Carnival in our home town, a really nice playdate, a Duck Tour of Boston, and a small shopping spree in the Museum of Science gift shop. But the most fun we’ve had as a family was the 10 minutes our 5-year-old and 16-month-old spent this morning alternating belly flops and belly laughs in our bed.
