Has there been any sort of change in his schedule lately? Sometimes in the summer time, kids can get thrown off in all sorts of ways due to changes in general routine.

    Those are great ideas, MRedinger.

My family and I went to spend this past 4th of July holiday in Wells, Maine. My son is 3 1/2 and he loves dinosaurs. So I got him a few cheap dinosaurs and we took them to the beach. He had a blast playing with them in the sand. Although we didn’t stay for the whole day at the beach, he spent most of his time playing in the sand with his dinosaurs.

We are going back again in a few weeks and I will bring some of the things you’ve listed here.

Have a wonderful summer to you both!

Does anyone have suggestions for their favorite waterproof sunscreen for kids? My son is very fair-skinned and needs to reapply sunscreen frequently in the summer…especially when around water at pools, the beach, etc. I’m looking for something that will last, especially with all the time he spends in the water.

We’re going on a family vacation to York, ME in a few weeks and are planning to spend a lot of time at the beach. Last summer, my little guy LOVED the beach. But, he was only 2 years old, so it he was easily entertained and spent a lot of time sleeping! Now that he’s a year older and a lot more active, I’m thinking I’ll need to have some toys and supplies on-hand to keep him busy. Anyone have ideas for keeping 3 year old’s busy and happy on the beach?

We’re spending a week in August up in ME with family. My husband’s family has a place on York Beach. Looking forward to some sun. My son loves the beach, so it’s sure to be a great week by the ocean.

    Happy summer, everyone!

We’re visiting my cousin’s pool this summer and I’m wondering what people use for pool safety devices. My preschooler is comfortable in the water, but he can’t really swim yet. Do you use arm floaties/swimmies? A full life jacket? I get so nervous with little ones at the pool…

I was having this issue with my son. He just wasn’t able to fall asleep easily with it still being light out around his 7 pm bedtime. I ended up getting room-darkening shades for his bedroom. For us, it’s worked like a charm. I highly recommend them!

We’re staying local this year. With a baby and a preschooler, traveling far is just not in the cards for us this summer! We’re going to take lots of trips to the local lake in town, our library for story time, and perhaps some weekend trips to a local state park. I’m looking forward to the day when larger-scale family vacations are do-able!

Better Homes & Gardens and Rachel Ray both share some really tasty looking slow cooker recipes on their sites. I definitely need to try some of these! The apple-bourbon pork ribs are definitely calling my name.
