Preschooler afraid of dogs
- February 6, 2013 at 9:47 am #20815
My son has always been a bit skiddish around dogs, but recently his fear has gotten even worse. I love dogs and had them growing up and I really don’t want him to be fearful, but I’m not sure how to help other than continue to reassure him that dogs can be nice! Anyone have experience with this?February 7, 2013 at 10:33 am #20817
It can be helpful to have your child spend a significant amount of time with one dog. Preferably a very calm, subdued, adult dog. This might ease his initial fears and help him to give other dogs a chance. It’ll give you a point of reference to speak about when he is fearful in the future.
One of my favorite local parenting blogs shared some tips about kids and fear of dogs recently. There might be some useful things here for you to check out: http://www.bostonmamas.com/2013/02/how_to_help_kids_overcome_fear_of_dogs.html#moreFebruary 11, 2013 at 6:26 am #20818
Does he like other animals, like cats? It might help to compare the next friendly dog you meet to another animal he is familiar with. Remind him that just like <fill in the blank animal> this dog wants to be his friend…
