DIY Fruit Christmas Tree: Holiday Dessert Idea

DIY Fruit Christmas Tree: Holiday Dessert Idea

Every year my mom has a holiday party where the featured guest is Santa arriving on a fire truck. It’s an amazing program that the local fire department runs and it’s really fun. Because it’s a kid-friendly party, the food needs to appeal to both kids and adults alike. I wanted something light and fresh to bring this year so when I saw this on Pinterest, I knew I had found the perfect treat.

I started by purchasing a styrofoam cone shape at my local craft store (they are in the wreath section). I bought two different sizes  because I couldn’t decide how big I wanted to make the tree. I also bought the green cone versus the white per the suggestion on the original link. I’m glad I did because otherwise the white would have shown through the empty spaces. I prepped all the fruit before assembly, including putting lemon juice on the apple slices so they wouldn’t brown and cutting some using a sort of star shaped cookie cutter.

The next step was to randomly poke all of the toothpicks into the cone. Once it was time to stick on the fruit. Ben was ready to step in to help. In hindsight, I wish I had covered more of the base with green grapes and filled in the more colorful fruit afteward. I think I had more empty spaces because nothing would really fit once the other fruit was already attached. Also, for  a party with 25 or so people, I could have used the smaller cone shape. Overall, I think we ended up with a great fruit tree and it was a big hit a the party. Once everything was prepped it took less than an hour to assemble but with Christmas tunes on the iPad and the whole family sitting around the table, it went by pretty quickly and was a nice morning activity.
