DIY Gel Manicures for Busy Working Moms

DIY Gel Manicures for Busy Working Moms

Today I want to talk about something really important to me – manicures. I know, I’m all about the hard hitting topics here. But in all seriousness, I have always loved having freshly manicured nails. Something about it just makes me feel more put together, no matter how crazy everything else in my life may be.

Before I had Liam, I almost always had freshly painted nails. I got regular manicures and in between would give myself DIY manicures. Not surprisingly, I found that keeping up with regular manicures fell off both the time and budget priority list when Liam entered the picture. We recently got Manicube in our office and they’re great – you can get a manicure right in the office in only 15 minutes. But even then, I just can’t justify spending $20 regularly just to have my nails done. For awhile, I decided I’d rely entirely on DIY manicures and actually got pretty good at it. But three days later, my nails would be chipping and needed to be dealt with again. This is not something I have the patience – or time – to deal with. So, I threw in the towel and decided manicures just didn’t work for my working mom lifestyle.

DIY Gel ManicureThen I pinned a post from The Sweetest Thing on DIY gel manicures using this stuff called Gelous and regular nail polish. At $5.99 for a bottle, I decided to give it a shot. Seriously, this stuff is amazing. I apply it just like the post says and my nails look great for a full week – a miracle in my book, particularly with the beating my nails take these days. It does take a bit longer to apply with all the layers, but I’ve found that only having to deal with my nails once a week feels totally manageable so I’m able to keep up with it. I try to find a time either pre-Liam wake up or post-Liam bedtime for my DIY manicure sessions. It’s one of my new favorite ways to fake looking more pulled together than I really am.

What are your tricks to “fake” looking pulled together as a working mom?
