Family Walks and Bike Rides: My Favorite Summer Memory

My favorite summer memory isn’t a family trip, or a wedding, or anything elaborate. It was a simple after-dinner walk and bike ride on a trail near our house. For once, the planets aligned and everything just worked out. Both kids were excited to go. No one complained they were tired and couldn’t ride. Max tried his very best to pedal, even when going up hill, and didn’t get frustrated, which is very difficult for him, especially after a full day of camp. I forgot the bug spray, but the bugs didn’t bother us. The evening was nice and cool and I ran. For a minute or two I ran alongside the boys on their bikes and didn’t feel like I was going to collapse. It’s something I’d been working towards for a long time, and a night that I will not forget any time soon.
There are not many outings we embark on where we begin with smiles on our faces and end the same way. This was one of them and that is truly memorable.
