Back-to-School: First Day of School Traditions We Love

Amy: I wore a uniform through elementary, middle and high school. So my favorite first-day-of-school tradition is getting the kids dressed in a new school outfit and snapping lots of photos. And I also love leaving first day of school notes in their lunchboxes as an added surprise during their day.

Mary: My kids’ favorite tradition is that I make pancakes for breakfast. I also draw a message in chalk in the driving to send them off and – of course – take that memorable first day of school photo.

Allison: Having a picture on my daughter’s first day of school is important to me. I also saw a cute tradition on Pinterest that I plan on starting. You ask your child their favorite things (song, food, activity, etc.) and write down their answers. I think it would be fun to compare year over year. Here are a few more first day of school traditions I’m thinking of starting this year.

First Day of School CupcakeHeather: We do the typical new outfit and picture on the front porch. In addition, every year I try to have a fun cupcake for after-school snack ready to go. Two years ago I added a print out of her back-to-school picture from that morning as a decoration! Last year, I wasn’t organized enough and forgot…so we went out for an afternoon ice cream. Either way, it’s a special snack!

Laura: I have friends with school-aged children who do this, and I can’t wait to start this tradition: Taking a photo on the first and last day of school to see how they’ve grown and changed through the school year. I’ve even seen some where the child is wearing the same outfit, which is hilarious when it’s way too small on the last day of school!

Media Mom: We keep it simple. Because we’re often on vacation just before school starts, we order school supplies online so we’re not rushing to get to the store. We try to buy one new outfit for the first day of school and take pictures at home and at school.

There are so many fun ways to make the first day of school special for children. What are your favorite back-to-school traditions?
