Going Green Taste Test for Picky Eaters
My daughter has always been a picky eater. There are only a few dinner menu items that I know she will actually eat and she always orders the same thing when going out to restaurants. With Earth Day this month, we’ve been focusing on being more green at home. We make sure we are recycling as much as possible, we unplug when something isn’t being used, we bring our own reusable bags when grocery shopping and we recently visited a local farmer’s market.
Although she was excited to help me pick out fresh fruits and vegetables to take home, she wasn’t too excited when it came time to eat them! I’ve tried different things over the years – involving her in making salads, using a sticker chart for finishing her meals or even bribing her with a small dessert if she finished her veggies. However, nothing seemed to work. So, I decided to turn food tasting into a game…
Green Foods Taste Test Game for Kids
- Green Beans
- Green Apples
- Pistachios (be cautious of nut allergies if doing this activity with a group)
I wasn’t sure if she’d actually try everything, but to my surprise, she did! She was so excited about the gaming aspect of the whole activity that she didn’t really focus on having to eat the different vegetables. I mixed them up with different fruits that I knew she liked and had her close her eyes when she was choosing the next ‘green’ food to eat.
She discovered that she actually likes broccoli, edamame and cucumbers! She’s always liked grapes, pistachios and apples, however, the green apple was a bit too sour for her liking. She wasn’t too fond of the zucchini or green beans, but she did try them so she gets credit for that. For dessert, a handful of green M&Ms!
