Greening Our Schools

This week marked the first of a new school year for my preschooler (sorry Cooking Mom!). We’re in a public school, so the first day is marked with notes home, emergency forms to fill out and wrapping paper fundraisers. One note we received was from my son’s Occupational Therapist. She is asking all families to send in Lysol, Lysol Wipes and tissues. While I understand why she wants us to send them, I’m not going to (well, I’ll send the tissues).  I’m going to do my part to ensure that for at least part of the year, the children receiving Occupational Therapy will have their toys cleaned with safe products. I think they will be just as protected from germs and out of harm’s way by avoiding the chemicals.

On a separate note, I am happy to report that my son’s teacher this year does not serve chocolate milk at snack time (though she does serve juice). I’ve already sent in a note asking that Max only be offered white milk or water and we  send our own snacks (to avoid Max eating Cookie Crisp! for snack). Boy, this school must love me huh?

My son is only 2 years old I say the same thing at his daycare. No juice and only food from home. So when my kid goes to school we have to supply those tissues and wipes?

I’m sure you don’t have to supply those things at every school, though I think it’s pretty commonplace for teachers to send home wish lists.

At orientation we had to bring paper towels and wipes to the kindergarten room, and ziplock bags and napkins to the extended day room!
