How to Tell Your Child You’re Pregnant

How to Tell Your Child You’re Pregnant

When I found out I was pregnant in February my husband and I were elated. We had been trying for quite some time and were almost at the point of accepting that Olivia would be our only child. And I was almost fine with that though, I’ll tell you, Olivia was not going to be. For over a year she constantly asked when she was going to be a big sister. One time, she even cried when a friend at preschool was sharing her “going to be a big sister” news.

So when it happened I was ready to tell her right away but knew there were too many risks with that – I had already had an early miscarriage with a previous pregnancy. And on top of that I had no idea how you tell a preschooler this news. I quickly learned through online message boards that people make a big deal about this. And there is a heck of a lot of chatter on this topic – way more than there probably needs to be.

I knew I didn’t want to make a hoopla of sharing this news but did think something special was called for. Someone online somewhere (pregnancy brain already sucked that info away) had a cute idea of presenting their child with a “big sister” t-shirt. I liked that idea – a lot. That’s what we did. I also ended up including our early ultrasound pics in case she needed more understanding. Glad I did because, oh, just watch the video…

Olivia now LOVES wearing her new big sister t-shirt. How did you share your big news with your other children, family or friends?

Awww, that’s cute. I love the way she kept looking at the pictures. My older daughter couldn’t have cared less when we told her and I waited forever to do so because I thought she would torture me for my whole pregnancy. Alas, she pretty much shrugged. Now, though, they are actually really good friends. BTW, Congratulations!! How exciting!
