Introducing Art, Music, & Dance to Kids: Children’s Books about Art

Reading books about art is just one of the terrific ways to introduce kids to art, music & dance and encourage them to tap into their own creative side. As part of our Growing Readers book review, our early education experts selected their favorite children’s books that celebrate art and music. Here are some of their recommended reads for every age group.

Children’s Books about Art, Dance & Music

For babies & toddlers:

Faces for Baby: This board book combines facial recognition, diversity, and art. Each page highlights a unique face illustrated by a well-known artist.

Sing: Sing tells the story of a sweet bird that just can’t quite find her voice. The bird starts out a little defeated but thanks to a boy who is singing his heart out while sitting under the bird’s nest, our feathered friend finds her strength and inner voice.

Marc Brown’s Playtime Rhymes: A Treasury for Families to Learn and Play Together: This beautifully illustrated collection includes the words to 20 popular children’s songs and finger plays. The accompanying drawings of the movements make it easy for parents to replicate these at home.

For preschoolers:

Flora and the Flamingo: Flora loves to dance and wants so much to imitate the beautiful moves of the graceful flamingo who is not interested in her earnest attempts. This picture book is filled with hope and humor and finally, friendship.

Brontorina: Brontorina is a lovable dinosaur who is determined to fulfill her dream of becoming a ballerina. This funny and irresistible book shows that with determination, heart, and a little creative thinking, anything is possible.

The Dot: Vashti is discouraged, she’s convinced she can’t draw. But a compassionate teacher encourages her to, “Just make a mark,” and inspires the young artist to embark on countless creative endeavors.

For school-age:

Get Into Art Animals: Discover Great Art and Create Your Own!: Behind each work by a famous artist lies a project to explore an art technique. Young readers are encouraged to observe and then make their own unique creations.

Ah, Music!: Part musical atlas, part musical history, and 100 percent musically interesting, Ah, Music! introduces children to music and its terminology. The book’s lively illustrations bring the story to life.
