To My Baby on Our First Mother’s Day
Our post today is from Aili Smith, a Bright Horizons employee and first-time mom to baby, Cab:
A letter to my first-born on our first Mother’s Day:
My Dear Little Boy,
Did you know that on this day, Mother’s Day, you have been in this world 37 weeks and 1 day, which is the same amount of time Mommy carried you, growing you from a speck to the wiggly, sweet six pound baby boy she and Daddy held so dear on that hot August day? Time has certainly moved quickly as many people warned; the hundreds of videos, thousands of photos taken, the millions of memories, they all make up these last months with you.
From wrapping you tightly in warm blankets when you were tiny, to comforting you as your teeth made an appearance, to laughing with Daddy at the funny baby pterodactyl-like sounds you used to make, (which have now morphed into words only we understand)…you’ve grown in leaps and bounds, and it’s been an amazing thing to see. I look forward to the chance that you will have in the future to see your own children in the same light.
I also love to see what you do at school each day. Chatting with your teachers when I come to pick you up, I can tell that you love school as much as I hoped you would. Your art projects hang proudly on the fridge, pushing aside the other fridge clutter, and you know what, Mommy might never take them down. You’ve given me have an amazing gift; as we spend those hours together each evening as the sun gets low in the sky, it makes Mommy forget what happened earlier that day almost instantly.
Even though you smile the biggest when I walk into a room, caress your face, and call to you with your special nickname, I know some day that I won’t be the only love of your life, the only one to kiss your sweet face, or be allowed to call you by a pet name – but Mommy has plans to do it for as long as you let me.
My sweet, loving Cabbie, you are the reason that every day, not just this Mother’s Day, is magical and special. As I rock you to sleep at night, your cherub face looking peaceful and content, I know that you, my love, are the best gift. Ever.
