Mom’s Birthday Celebrations: Why Forty IS Fabulous
As a teenager, I remember thinking how old 40 seemed. 40 year olds had jobs and kids and an unbelievable amount of responsibility. They certainly didn’t seem to have all that much fun. However, as I neared 40 years old I realized how great an age it actually is. And now that I’m here, I can officially say, forty IS fabulous.
Celebrating My 40th Birthday
It probably doesn’t hurt that my 40th birthday celebrations lasted more than a month. Six months ago, when my husband asked me if I wanted a party for my 40th, I told him no. The way I saw it, we could throw a party at a local bar, probably spend way too much money on drinks and spend the next day not feeling so great while our kids were eager to enjoy the day. What I really wanted was a weekend away with just my husband. A time to reconnect and do something fun. When he asked where, I told him Atlantis in the Bahamas.
I choose Atlantis for a few reasons. I’ve heard amazing things about it for both couples and families but also heard it’s incredibly expensive so I wanted to visit without kids to see if it was really worth the expense. Plus it’s supposed to be an easy, direct flight from Boston. With June being one of the busiest months in our family between end-of-the school-year events and birthdays, we were really limited to just one weekend. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), you actually can’t fly direct to the Bahamas in June so our weekend away turned into five days. The trip was fabulous and as my husband had done for my 30th birthday, he booked a surprise trip to swim the dolphins. The highlight of my 40th year (so far).
Celebrating my 40th also involved a dinner out with a group of friends and a lobster bake with my best friend and our families. I also celebrated with my in-laws. By the time it was my actual birthday, we forgot to sing! While there were plenty of celebrations to make this year extra special there was also an incredibly unique gift my husband gave me.
My Favorite 40th Birthday Gift
The night of the lobster bake, my husband told me there was another birthday surprise. I thought for sure my best friend and I would be taking her new Jeep out for a celebratory spin (mid-life crisis?). As I sat on the couch, ready to hear about our adventure, surrounded by the kids and my friends, my husband started up the DVD player. For the next 38 minutes I watched a video of all my friends and family wishing me a happy birthday, talking about what they love most about me and sharing favorite memories. As it turns out, for the last six months my husband had been collecting video excerpts for this special project. It included a video of me a young child riding my first tricycle, a snip-it from my roommate of five years after college whom I haven’t seen in ages, a dear childhood friend of mine making one of our favorite dinners, my oldest friend of 38 years bringing up stories from when we were kids that I don’t even remember – my own kids even made recordings during the last six months, sometimes right under my nose (while on a trip to Disney for example). The officiant who married us even put together a beautiful video for the surprise and so much more. For 38 minutes I received some touching reminders of all the people who have left footprints in my heart in the last 40 years.
The video is really a reminder of why being 40 IS so fabulous! I’m in a great place in my life, surrounded by friends and family who love me and whom I love, I have a good job and an amazing husband. I have two beautiful kids and can confidently say our family is the perfect size for us. I feel financially stable and am happy with what we’ve been able to afford at this point in our lives. I know who I am and I know what I want to achieve. I can also say with confidence that while I have a job, kids and unbelievable responsibility, I do have a LOT of fun with both my family and friends. Lucky me – Fabulous 40!
