Well Aware Challenge Update

So I must confess, I totally forgot about the Well Aware Challenge until last Monday. But since being reminded of it, I’ve done pretty well. My goal is to fit in 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week…without my kids.  I know that a fit family is one that stays together, or something like that, but in addition to the physical benefits of exercise, I’m also looking for the mental ones. I wanted time for myself to find that runner’s high and sense of clarity that everyone talks about and for some reason having to break up fights or change channels on the TV all while walking on the treadmill isn’t the mind clearing work out I needed.

For the past three days, I’ve taken an extra 1/2 hour for myself in the morning to get on the treadmill and do a quick workout. I know it’s not much, and that I could use more time, but it’s what works for me right now. I’ve really come to see that anything helps. 30 minutes each day is better than nothing. I was surprised that I could fit in a decent workout in that short amount of time.

I’m fortunate to work from home, and fully realize this process wouldn’t work otherwise. Instead of getting dressed in the morning, I put on my work out clothes. While my kids are eating breakfast, I fill up my waterbottle and get my iPad ready. Once Max gets on the bus, I jump on the treadmill for 30 minutes. I either listen to an audiobook, podcast, or catch up on a show (I’m currently hooked on Call the Midwife on the PBS app). Once I’m done, I take a quick shower and get started on work. Our mornings are pretty stressful, as I’ve talked about before, so having this time to myself to sweat it out actually has made for more productive days for me.

I’ve heard it takes two weeks to form a habit so I’m hoping that the final two weeks of the Well Aware Challenge will help me get on the fitness track I’ve been hoping for. Stay tuned for my final results!
