Why Moms Love Snow Days Too

Why Moms Love Snow Days Too

Nemo, the poorly named blizzard, stormed into New England last week closing down highways, towns, Starbucks (gasp!), and schools. With snowfall predictions as high as 34 inches and threats of possible road closures, our home office quickly put in place plans for employees to work from home when possible.

I currently work from home two days a week. My home office and computer are already equipped for working remotely. So this shouldn’t be a problem, right? Except for one small detail…the kids.

First Olivia’s school was announced closed for Friday. Then, Owen’s center announced an early closing at 10:30 a.m. Typically when one of the kids (especially Olivia – age 6) is out of school, I can get in a full day of work with some extra hours after bedtime. But with two home at the same time I decided to call it. I was taking a snow “sick” day!

I rescheduled meetings. I put on my Out of Office notification. I shut down my computer. Rather than stressing about checking email and getting work done during lunch and naps, I was simply out for the day. And it was rejuvenating!

Rather than reviewing website content, I made Valentines.

Instead of running to Panera or the vending machine for a mid-day snack, I had a nap and then made Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel Bites.

My two hour commute turned into a peaceful snow walk with the kids.

And I like my co-workers but I love that I got to spend the day with him.

This working mom LOVES snow days! And I’m glad I took it off because the next day I was really sick – not fake sick.

I am now feeling super guilty about the very lame Target Valentines I bought for my daughter to distribute and then had to jerry-rig because they didn’t come with anything to seal them shut. It’s seriously pathetic. And we had the same snow days.

That’s where our Valentines typically come from when we aren’t snowed in the weekend before Valentine’s Day. And you worked – even brought your daughter in for the day. Now that’s impressive!
