Working Mom: Business Travel with a Preschooler at Home

Working Mom: Business Travel with a Preschooler at Home

I’m off to Orlando this week for a work conference. I don’t often travel for work, so this four day business trip is a big deal for my whole family, especially with a preschooler at home. Last time, I was trying to figure out how to go on a business trip while nursing, so I was thinking this time would be so much easier. No need to pack a pump! In some ways, though, it’s even harder now that Liam is a preschooler. He is in the sweet spot where he cognitively knows I’m gone, but still really wants and needs his mama. It sounds so silly and melodramatic, but I had a really hard time finally leaving his room after bedtime the other evening knowing I wouldn’t put him to bed again for five days while traveling for work.

What I’m Thankful for While Traveling for Work

Preschooler and Father reunite after Business TripThere are things that are easier though and I’m thankful for those. I’m thankful for FaceTime (and really iPhones in general) so I can see him and talk to my preschooler and actually witness how he’s doing even though I’m not with him. I’m thankful that he’s aware enough now to talk about the fact that I’m going away and understand when I’ll be back. He’s actually very excited that, in his words, I’m going to “see Mickey” and he can’t wait to see what Mickey will give me to bring back for him (Mental note: Stop at the airport gift shop). And last but certainly not least, I’m thankful for my wonderful husband for holding down the fort and planning all sorts of fun outings for Liam while I’m gone. He’s done a great job with this in the past being a super dad while mom was on a business trip, and I’m somewhat concerned that Liam may have so much fun he’ll actually be disappointed to see me when I get back.

I’m definitely not the best business traveler, but trips like this are always a wonderful reminder of how lucky I am to have so much to miss and to look forward to seeing when I get home.

One last thing, though. Hun, if you could also potty train Liam while I’m gone, I’ll get you a present from Mickey too.

Great Post! So many moms relate to your story. So true!

I would like to share an application we’ve developed so you can Skype and play at the same time from any distance. http://www.letsplayplease.com

Preschoolers will to play tic-tac-toe, penalty kick, create stories and many more games and activities with you while you are away, like if you both were in the same room.

Please let us know what you think if you have a chance to use it.

    Thank you very much!
